Wi-Fi 8 is officially here, at least on paper. TP-Link just opened pre-orders for the Archer 8 Ultra, its first Wi-Fi 8 router, and the pitch this time is a little different. Instead of chasing bigger peak speed numbers, Wi-Fi 8 is built around consistency, keeping your connection steady in the messy real-world conditions most of us deal with every day, like crowded channels, interference, and devices at the edge of the house.
The headline feature is TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 8 StabilityEngine. The company says it delivers up to 33% more consistent throughput than Wi-Fi 7 at mid-to-long range, plus up to 24% more consistent throughput under interference. Some of those improvements are live at launch, and the rest, including features meant to boost many-device capacity, strengthen coverage at the edges of your home, and coordinate homes with more than one access point, will roll out later through over-the-air updates as the standard matures.
On the hardware side, the Archer 8 Ultra runs on Broadcom’s Wi-Fi 8 chipset, built on the upcoming IEEE 802.11bn standard, and delivers 19 Gbps of tri-band Wi-Fi. Wired connectivity is strong too, with two 10 Gbps auto-sensing WAN/LAN ports for multigig internet plans and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports for a PC or game console. Inside the chassis, 18 antennas cover up to 3,600 sq. ft. (3,000 sq. ft. in the EU) and as many as 200 devices. A Multi-Floor Mode reshapes the signal depending on whether your devices are spread across levels or sitting on one floor, and a new RF chip adds Range Boost to better pick up distant, low-power devices.
TP-Link is also leaning on software to make things easier. The Aireal AI Assistant inside the Tether app lets you ask plain-language questions about your network, while working behind the scenes with a Wi-Fi Optimizer that tunes the router to the clearest channel, Self-Healing for common issues, QoS to prioritize important traffic, and an ECO Mode that trims power draw during off-peak hours. Setup is as simple as tapping your phone to the router over NFC, and guests can join the same way without needing a password.
Security gets a full rundown as well, with a hardware-level VPN that encrypts selected devices’ traffic right on the router and works with third-party VPN providers. Guest and IoT networks are isolated to keep vulnerability-prone gadgets off your main network, and the optional HomeShield service adds real-time protection, advanced parental controls, and WPA3 authentication.
Pricing and availability: Pre-orders opened September 30, 2026 in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada, and more, with pricing set by each region’s local TP-Link site. No US pricing or pre-order date has been announced yet, though a broader global rollout for the Archer 8 Ultra and the upcoming Deco 8 Ultra mesh system is planned over the coming months.
