Roblox is rolling out two new account types worldwide designed specifically for younger players, introducing stricter age-based protections and giving parents more control over how their children use the platform.
The new system divides users under 16 into two groups: Roblox Kids for children aged 5 to 8, and Roblox Select for users aged 9 to 15. The company says the experience will automatically adapt as children grow, gradually unlocking more features and content as they get older.
For the youngest players, Roblox Kids comes with some of the platform’s strictest protections yet. Chat is disabled by default, and users can only access games rated “Minimal” or “Mild” that have passed an additional review process. Parents can also choose to block or approve individual games through linked parental accounts.
Roblox Select offers a little more freedom while still maintaining guardrails. Users in this category can access games rated up to “Moderate,” while chat capabilities gradually expand depending on age and region. Where available, players can communicate with others in their age group or with approved “Trusted Friends,” a feature designed for people they know outside the platform.
The new accounts are backed by Roblox’s age verification technology, which the company has been expanding aggressively over the past year. Users are assigned account types based on age checks, which can include facial age estimation or verification through parents. Roblox says more than half of its global daily active users have already completed an age check.
The changes also affect game developers. Titles available to younger users must pass stricter moderation and meet new requirements, including additional safety reviews and ongoing monitoring. Social hangouts, free-form drawing experiences, one-to-one chat, and games involving sensitive topics are excluded from the Kids and Select catalogs altogether.
The move comes as Roblox faces increasing scrutiny over child safety and online interactions. Several regulators have investigated the platform in recent years, prompting Roblox to invest heavily in moderation tools, parental controls, and age verification systems.
